Bill Swain, Ingleside's Winemaker, is one of the most respected wine makers to come out of California. He honed his craft throughout the western hemisphere—his last stop was in Venezuela. There he was winemaker and head of production for Bodegas Pomar, one of the leading wineries of that region. While earning his Bachelor of Science in Viticulture and Enology from the University of California Davis, Bill found plenty of time for football.
Winemaking, as a career, began as most do—by serving as an Assistant Winemaker. Bill's first experience was at the Charles Krug Winery in Saint Helena, California. Later Bill became the winemaker for the premium brands of Guild Wineries in Fresno. He then established the Three Rivers Winery in Oregon which became and continues to be very successful. After selling the Three Rivers Winery, Bill took the position of Production Coordinator for a consortium of four corporate wineries: Columbia, Covey Run, Paul Thomas, and Ste. Chapelle.
Maria Swain, Bill’s wife, is Ingleside's assistant winemaker and lab technician. As a native of Venezuela, Maria began her wine career in the South American wine industry. Maria holds a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Food Science Technology, which was conferred by the Universidad Centro Lisandro Alvarado.
Bill and Maria are very happy to be in Virginia and working at Ingleside Vineyards. The large number of grape varieties that grow so well in Virginia's Northern Neck allow him to create some very special wines. Bill once observed that “the quality of Virginia wines is equal to wines from around the world yet Virginia’s wine industry is just in its infancy. It is exciting to be a part of its future.”
